Intro

A while ago, I ran into a YouTube-video by a company called 'SRI International' who had managed to make tiny magnetic robots which zipped around over a substrate, actually managing to build stuff in the process. Here's the video, go watch it if you haven't yet:

After the video came out, a few people got thinking on how hard it could be. There didn't seem to be any rocket science involved, just magnets and printed circuit boards. Mike of Mike's Electric Stuff actually published a video where he did a very barebones proof-of-concept with a bit of veroboard and a lab PSU.

That got me thinking: if that was all it took to manually move a few magnets around, how hard could it be to do it automatically and in 2 dimensions?
