Building the device
The device is simple enough to not need a PCB or whatever. I decided to build
it completely 'in the air' on the back of a DB9-connector. The back of my
server already is a huge mess, so this wouldn't make it that much worse :-)
I left out the diode, because one already was built into the counter itself.
I decided to install the counter itself on a shelf on my desk, using duc[k|t]tape:
Because the wires carry 24V to an inductor using relatively high currents, the wires from the counter to the PC can be quite long. I haven't tried it, my cable is around 1M, but I figure that tens of meters won't cause any problems when using cable that's thick enough.
